Restoration and Discipline
Summary
Section titled “Summary”YWAM Sendai seeks to respond to student struggles with truth, care, and accountability. The goal of discipline is not punishment for its own sake. The goal is restoration, protection of the community, and faithful response to serious concerns.
This page explains the general approach to restoration and discipline when a student’s conduct, participation, or attitude creates significant concern.
This page explains how serious concerns are handled when academic, behavioral, or community issues require formal response.
Who is this page for?
Section titled “Who is this page for?”This page is for students enrolled in YWAM Sendai schools and for those who need to understand how serious concerns are normally handled.
What is the purpose of restoration and discipline?
Section titled “What is the purpose of restoration and discipline?”The purpose of restoration and discipline is to:
- help students respond honestly to serious issues
- protect the health and safety of the community
- address harmful or disruptive behavior
- support repentance, growth, and restoration where possible
- maintain the integrity of the school environment
What kinds of issues may lead to disciplinary response?
Section titled “What kinds of issues may lead to disciplinary response?”Disciplinary response may be needed in cases such as:
- repeated refusal to follow school or community expectations
- serious dishonesty
- harmful relational behavior
- harassment or intimidation
- sexual misconduct
- substance misuse
- repeated academic non-participation
- behavior that threatens safety, trust, or the integrity of the school
Not every struggle leads to formal discipline. The response depends on the seriousness, pattern, and context of the issue.
What is the normal first response when a concern arises?
Section titled “What is the normal first response when a concern arises?”The normal first response is usually:
- conversation
- clarification
- pastoral care
- an opportunity for the student to respond and change course
YWAM Sendai seeks to address concerns early where possible rather than waiting for problems to grow.
Is there a normal process for escalating serious concerns?
Section titled “Is there a normal process for escalating serious concerns?”Yes. When needed, YWAM Sendai may respond through a staged process that aims at restoration and accountability.
This process may include:
-
Informal encouragement
Staff address the concern directly, clearly, and pastorally, with the goal of helping the student respond well at an early stage. -
Formal warning
If the issue continues or is more serious, the student may receive a formal warning and a clear explanation of the concern, the expected change, and the possible consequences if the issue is not addressed. -
Final warning
If necessary, the student may be given a final opportunity and a defined period in which to respond, change course, and demonstrate willingness to cooperate with expectations. -
Dismissal or unsuccessful completion
If the issue remains unresolved, or if the situation is serious enough to require it, YWAM Sendai may determine that the student cannot continue in the school or cannot successfully complete it.
The exact process may vary depending on the seriousness of the issue. Some situations may require immediate action without moving through every stage.
Is dismissal possible?
Section titled “Is dismissal possible?”Yes. In serious cases, or when a student refuses to respond to correction, dismissal from the school may be necessary.
Dismissal may be considered when:
- the safety of others is at risk
- the student’s behavior seriously damages the community
- the student persistently refuses accountability
- the student is no longer able or willing to participate appropriately in the school
Does discipline always mean punishment?
Section titled “Does discipline always mean punishment?”No. Discipline at YWAM Sendai is intended to be restorative where possible. This means the aim is to help the student face reality honestly, take responsibility, and move toward healing and change.
However, restoration does not remove the need for clear boundaries or serious consequences when required.
How are fairness and care handled?
Section titled “How are fairness and care handled?”YWAM Sendai seeks to handle concerns with:
- prayer
- careful discernment
- appropriate confidentiality
- clear communication
- proportional response
- care for both the individual and the wider community
What should a student do if they know they are struggling?
Section titled “What should a student do if they know they are struggling?”A student who knows they are struggling should speak honestly with a school leader or appropriate staff member as early as possible.
Early honesty often makes restoration more possible and prevents unnecessary escalation.
