Cash in Japan

Japan still relies on cash in many everyday situations, and some YWAM Sendai payments must be made in Japanese yen cash on site. This page explains when cash may be required and how to prepare for cash payments in Japan.

If a school, staff instruction, or finance page says that a payment must be made in cash, follow that instruction even if other payment methods are available for different types of payments.

Cash may be required for certain on-site payments, especially school-related costs such as:

  • accommodation
  • food
  • outreach payments

Always check the relevant page or staff instruction to confirm:

  • whether the payment must be made in cash
  • the exact amount due
  • the due date
  • whether the payment must be made in Japanese yen

Why does YWAM Sendai mention cash so clearly?

Section titled “Why does YWAM Sendai mention cash so clearly?”

YWAM Sendai mentions cash clearly because some people arrive in Japan expecting to pay everything digitally. That is not always realistic.

If a required payment is cash only, arriving without access to enough yen can create unnecessary stress and delay.

How should I prepare for cash payments in Japan?

Section titled “How should I prepare for cash payments in Japan?”

Before arriving in Japan or before a cash payment deadline, make sure you know:

  • how much cash you will need
  • when you will need it
  • where you can withdraw yen
  • whether your bank card works in Japan
  • whether your withdrawal limits are high enough

It is wise to prepare this in advance rather than waiting until the last minute.

Where can I usually withdraw cash in Japan?

Section titled “Where can I usually withdraw cash in Japan?”

Many international visitors are able to withdraw cash from ATMs in Japan, but availability depends on the card network and issuing bank.

ATMs that are often useful for international cards include:

  • 7-Bank ATMs, such as those found in many 7-Eleven convenience stores
  • Japan Post Bank ATMs
  • other major ATM networks that support foreign cards

Because card compatibility varies, it is wise to test your access early after arrival if you know you will need cash later.

What should I check with my bank before coming to Japan?

Section titled “What should I check with my bank before coming to Japan?”

Before coming to Japan, check:

  • whether your card works internationally
  • whether it works in Japan specifically
  • your daily withdrawal limit
  • any foreign transaction or ATM fees
  • whether you need to notify your bank about travel

Withdrawal limits may apply depending on both your bank and the ATM operator.

If you need a larger amount of cash for a required payment, you may need to:

  • withdraw money over more than one day
  • plan ahead before the payment deadline
  • confirm your limits with your bank in advance

Not necessarily. Carrying large amounts of cash may not be wise unless you need it immediately for a required payment.

Plan ahead, but use normal caution and good judgment when carrying or storing cash.

If you are unsure, check the relevant handbook page or ask YWAM Sendai before arrival or before the payment deadline.

Do not guess, especially for school fees, housing payments, food costs, or outreach-related expenses.
