History of YWAM Sendai

The story of YWAM Sendai is one of prayer, patient preparation, and long-term commitment to the Sendai and Tohoku region. Before there was an established community in Sendai, there were years of vision, prayer, and repeated engagement with the region.

This page gives a brief overview of how YWAM Sendai developed and how that history continues to shape its identity today.

The history of YWAM Sendai helps explain:

  • why the community is rooted in Sendai
  • why Tohoku remains central to its sense of calling
  • why prayer, language, and long-term presence matter so much
  • how the community developed its current identity over time

This history is not only about dates and milestones. It also helps explain the posture and priorities of the community today.

Before there was a permanent YWAM presence in Sendai, there were years of prayer, vision trips, outreach, and growing burden for the Tohoku region.

During this period, Gary and Naoko Seddon, while serving with YWAM Tokyo, helped lead vision trips, prayer walks, and outreach teams across the region. Over time, Sendai became increasingly clear as a strategic place for long-term ministry and presence.

These years laid important foundations:

  • prayer for the region
  • repeated engagement with Tohoku
  • discernment about long-term calling
  • growing conviction that Northern Japan needed a more rooted YWAM presence

In the summer of 2018, Gary and Naoko Seddon, together with another couple, were officially sent out from YWAM Tokyo to pioneer in Sendai.

The early season focused on establishing foundations rather than rapid expansion. This included:

  • building relationships in the local context
  • learning how to live faithfully in Sendai
  • establishing rhythms of prayer and worship
  • beginning the slow work of rooted presence in the city and region

This pioneering stage was important in shaping the character of YWAM Sendai as a community that values depth, faithfulness, and long-term commitment.

2020–2023: A season of hidden preparation

Section titled “2020–2023: A season of hidden preparation”

The COVID-19 years became a season of waiting, hiddenness, and preparation.

Although this period limited many outward activities, it also became an important time for:

  • internal strengthening
  • language study
  • spiritual formation
  • clarifying community identity
  • deepening rhythms of prayer and shared life

During this season, YWAM Sendai’s identity became more clearly shaped around a community life marked by prayer, discipleship, and intentional presence in Japan.

As that earlier season of preparation gave way to a new stage, YWAM Sendai began to move more visibly into training and multiplication.

A major milestone was the launch of the first bilingual Discipleship Training School (DTS) in September 2023. This was followed by a second bilingual DTS in September 2024.

These developments marked an important transition from pioneering and preparation into a more established training ministry in Sendai.

YWAM Sendai continues to grow as an international community serving in the local context of Japan. Its history has helped shape several enduring priorities:

  • prayer and worship as foundational, not secondary
  • long-term commitment to Sendai and Tohoku
  • bilingual and cross-cultural community life
  • discipleship and training
  • patient, relational ministry rather than hurried expansion

These priorities are not separate from the history of the community. They have emerged through that history.

YWAM Sendai’s future development includes continued growth in training, community life, and long-term ministry in the region.

As the work develops, the aim is not only to expand activity, but to remain faithful to the calling that shaped the community from the beginning: to be rooted in prayer, present in place, and available for God’s purposes in Sendai and the wider Tohoku region.
