Community Standards and Commitments
Summary
Section titled “Summary”Community life at YWAM Sendai is shaped by shared spiritual, relational, and practical commitments. These standards are not intended to create unnecessary control or formality. They exist to help the community live faithfully, serve responsibly, and maintain healthy relationships with one another, with local churches, and with the wider people among whom YWAM Sendai ministers.
These commitments apply across the community, although the exact responsibilities may differ by role. Staff, students, teams, and visitors are all expected to respect the standards that shape life together at YWAM Sendai.
Why does YWAM Sendai have shared standards and commitments?

Section titled “What does YWAM Sendai teach about marriage, sex, and gender?”YWAM Sendai expects all staff, students, teams, and visitors to respect the ministry’s Christian understanding of sex, marriage, and relationships.
In keeping with historic Christian belief and the theological convictions under which this ministry serves:
- marriage is understood as the covenant union of one man and one woman
- sexual relationships are expected to be kept within that covenant
- people serving within the community are expected to live in a way that aligns with their biological sex
These expectations are not included to target particular individuals, but to provide clarity about the theological and ministry framework of YWAM Sendai. They also reflect the importance of maintaining trust, unity, and credible witness in relationship with local churches and the wider ministry context in Japan.

This includes:
- listening before assuming
- honoring local culture and relationships
- avoiding entitlement or superiority
- taking language and cultural learning seriously where applicable

People should not assume that sincerity alone is enough to serve well cross-culturally.

This includes commitment to rhythms such as:
- worship and prayer

- rest and Sabbath
- hospitality
- community communication
These rhythms help the community remain grounded, sustainable, and relationally healthy.
Are these standards the same as a detailed rulebook?
Section titled “Are these standards the same as a detailed rulebook?”No. These standards are not intended to function as an exhaustive rulebook for every possible situation.
They are shared commitments that help define the posture, boundaries, and expectations of life together at YWAM Sendai. More specific expectations may be explained in role-based pages, school guidance, onboarding materials, or safety policies.
What happens if someone cannot agree with these commitments?
Section titled “What happens if someone cannot agree with these commitments?”A person who cannot agree with the standards and commitments of YWAM Sendai should communicate honestly rather than pretending alignment.
In some cases, this may mean:
- further conversation for clarification
- adjustment of expectations
- reconsideration of participation
- a decision not to proceed with a role, school, team, or visit
Clarity is healthier than confusion, hidden disagreement, or avoidable strain within the community.
