The Tohoku Mandate

YWAM Sendai has a specific calling to serve Sendai and the wider Tohoku region of Japan. This calling is not based only on geography, but on a conviction that God cares deeply for this region and that long-term Christian presence matters here.

The Tohoku mandate gives regional focus to the identity and mission of YWAM Sendai.

Tohoku is the northeastern region of Japan’s main island. It includes six prefectures:

  • Aomori
  • Iwate
  • Miyagi
  • Akita
  • Yamagata
  • Fukushima

Sendai, in Miyagi Prefecture, is the largest city in the region and serves as a natural hub for travel, relationships, training, and ministry.

What does YWAM Sendai mean by the Tohoku mandate?

Section titled “What does YWAM Sendai mean by the Tohoku mandate?”

The Tohoku mandate is the conviction that YWAM Sendai is called to serve this region intentionally, prayerfully, and over the long term.

This means YWAM Sendai does not see Sendai only as a convenient base location. Sendai is the place from which the community seeks to love, serve, and invest in the wider region of Tohoku.

YWAM Sendai focuses on Tohoku because mission is most fruitful when it is rooted in real people and real places. A regional focus helps the community:

  • build long-term relationships
  • understand local realities more deeply
  • serve with greater humility and relevance
  • partner more faithfully with local churches and communities
  • avoid a shallow or event-driven approach to mission

What role does Sendai play in this regional calling?

Section titled “What role does Sendai play in this regional calling?”

Sendai serves as a practical and relational hub for YWAM Sendai’s work in the wider Tohoku region.

This means YWAM Sendai seeks to use its base in Sendai to support:

  • prayer for the whole region
  • training and formation for workers serving in Tohoku
  • relationships with churches and ministries across prefectural lines
  • outreach, hospitality, and regional partnership
  • long-term ministry presence beyond one city alone

YWAM Sendai does not view Sendai as an end in itself, but as a place of stewardship for the wider region.

The Tohoku mandate shapes ministry by giving direction to prayer, training, outreach, hospitality, and long-term planning.

This includes:

  • praying regularly for Sendai and the wider Tohoku region
  • equipping students and staff to understand the region they are serving
  • building ministry rhythms that are locally rooted
  • valuing language and cultural learning
  • strengthening relationships with churches and people in the region
  • making decisions with long-term regional fruitfulness in view

Is YWAM Sendai only concerned with Tohoku?

Section titled “Is YWAM Sendai only concerned with Tohoku?”

No. YWAM Sendai is part of a global mission movement and remains connected to the wider purposes of God in Japan and the nations.

However, its primary local responsibility is to serve Sendai and Tohoku faithfully. This regional focus gives clarity to its identity and stewardship.

Regional focus matters because it helps turn broad mission language into concrete responsibility. It encourages YWAM Sendai to become accountable, rooted, and consistent in one place rather than scattered in many directions.

It also helps students, staff, supporters, and partners understand the specific context in which YWAM Sendai lives and serves.
